Hospital
Pathology
At ECPC, we believe our role as pathologists does not start or end with a diagnosis. Our goal is not just to name a disease process, but to determine what caused it and predict how it can be most effectively treated.
When we partner with a community hospital, we view our team as integral members of the clinical care team. We know that our findings and recommendations form the basis for patient treatment plans, other important health decisions and even larger community-based population health surveys.
Improving long-term health outcomes and controlling health care costs relies heavily on the right diagnosis. At ECPC, we provide:
Commitment to advanced technology
We are the first pathology group in Connecticut to apply digital pathology to primary diagnosis
Comprehensive pathology reports
We provide comprehensive results in an easy-to-digest format. Our reports go beyond those typically found in our field, with an extra microscopic description and photomicrographs. View a sample pathology report.
Internal case review
Utilizing a robust internal review process, a significant proportion of our cases are prospectively reviewed by a second pathologist prior to initial sign out. This includes all malignancies, all needle biopsy specimens and all breast specimens.
Fast intraoperative turnaround
We take seriously our integral support of hospital surgical and oncology teams. We report 99.5 percent of intraoperative cases in less than 20 minutes. In fact, we consistently out-perform industry standards for turn-around times (90 percent in less than 20 minutes).
Physician support
We provide 24/7 access to an on-call pathologist for support with STAT or routine specimens. Contact us.

Pathology Subspecialty Expertise
At ECPC, we have intentionally developed our pathology team to include a wide range of subspecialty expertise. We believe that we can deliver the most comprehensive, insightful and accurate assessments by uniquely combining a private practice business model with subspecialty expertise comparable to the nation’s top academic medical centers.
From our experience serving community hospitals, outpatient GI centers and cancer centers, our team consistently works with complex case presentations and rare diseases. This type of case mix allows us to maintain the highest diagnostic standards for the hospital and physician office laboratories we manage.
All of our pathologists are board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Many of them bring additional fellowship training, notable research contributions and experience working with local and national organizations to inform protocols and best practices in the field. Meet our team.
Hospital Lab leadership
Since 1993, ECPC has provided sophisticated diagnostic services and clinical lab management to community hospitals throughout southern New England. Our rich history of clinical expertise (over 100 years of combined experience) includes high-level involvement in medical staff leadership, peer review and corporate leadership at the board level of the hospitals and laboratories we serve.
ECPC has played a pivotal role in developing robust multidisciplinary treatment programs in order to increase the quality of care provided to our patients and to support our clinical colleagues:
Cancer leadership
ECPC has been instrumental in the development and ongoing operation of the Eastern Connecticut Cancer Institute at the John A. DeQuattro Cancer Center in Manchester, CT and of the Leever Cancer Center in Waterbury, CT.
Patient-centered care
We make it our job to understand the needs of the physicians and patients in the communities we serve, helping to integrate new tests and technology as needed.
Multidisciplinary approach
We serve on hospital disease management teams (or “tumor boards”) to help guide customized treatment plans for cancer and medical patients.
Quality improvement
Monica Srodon, MD, one of our partners, founded the Molecular Testing Committee at ECHN to standardize advanced testing for cancers in a timely and cost-effective manner. This approach has been held up as a model for cancer care and has been adopted at other hospitals in Connecticut.

Pathology Research
We believe that the field of pathology directly links advances in medical research to improvements in patient care. Our team has experience as adjunct teaching faculty at prominent medical schools. We have participated in research and clinical studies across our subspecialty areas to improve detection of specific diseases, better understand the underlying pathogenesis of disease, and improve processes and techniques within the pathology lab.
